About the Substancia Nigra Dance project:
Dance is considered the most complex forms of movement ever achieved by human beings. In fact, humans are the only species that developed the motor ability to: move in deliberate and rhythmic way, communicate and express emotions through movement and extract qualities such as beauty from it (aesthetics).
But how does this happen? How do dancers gather visual and verbal information and transform it into motor action in order to learn movements? How are complex sequences of movement memorised and performed? Over the past decade, neuroscientists have started to look at dance as an opportunity to understand the nature of human movement and action-observation networks.
Selene Swan is a dancer that has done her postgraduate studies in neuroscience and is currently doing her studies on Dance Movement Pyschotheraphy and has decided to join her two passions by doing her research thesis around the cerebral phenomena beyond dance, having worked with one of the most influential researchers in the field. This gave birth to the Substancia Nigra dance project. With five years of experience in Modern Bellydance with hints of contemporary dance, this workshop aims to explore movement through those dance styles' vocabulary.
This is not a workshop to just learn the movements but to enhance dance skills based on what is known about the learning, execution and observation of dance from the neuroscientific point of view. This will be a total different way of teaching and learning in a totally different class environment. Be ready to change the way you learn and perform movement, lets get these neurons dancing!
